Each year I try to do something special for my birthday: a road trip, an art gallery, or a yoga class… this year I did it all!

I was so grateful I made it to Ottawa to visit with family and visit my favourite painting (Lawren Harris’ North Shore, shown above – photo credit to John Meadows) at the National Gallery of Canada. The “Radical Stitch” exhibit was mind-blowing too, it’s on until the end of September and I highly recommend seeing it if you can!
Anyone who knows me, knows I love to support small businesses and communities. Before we headed home we stopped at two spots in Carlton Place, Ontario (Hwy 7).
Carlton Place Gallery

When we arrived in Carlton Place on Sunday night, we did a drive through the down town. Everything was closed, but as we cruised over the bridge I thought I spotted an art gallery I hadn’t seen in town before. Noted to self “Go back Tuesday.”
Deadly Grounds Cafe
So, after our big trip to the National Gallery on Monday, before we left town on Tuesday, we hit up a recommended cafe “Deadly Grounds” and we were NOT disappointed. The vibe of this place was epic:

Friendly service, lots to look at, creative and fun… and great coffee! Wasn’t I thrilled when I found the perfect coffee mug at the Carlton Place Gallery right after!

The mug is hand made pottery by Christina Stapper. A perfect fit for my hands, and keeps my coffee hot longer!
As my week off comes to an end, I can say it was a very happy birthday for me; and I’m excited to see what this “new year” had ahead…
Don’t forget to follow me on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube… and sign up for my “Artist Note” monthly newsletter to learn more about what’s happening in the studio… the next note will go out mid-September!
